Burr Trail Road Details

What began as a cattle trail, blazed by stockman John Atlantic Burr, is the present-day Burr Trail Road. It extends 36 miles east from the town of Boulder on Utah Highway to the Notom-Bullfrog Road, which intersects the Burr Trail Road coming from the north. Burr Trail continues for 36 miles more, turning first into BLM 12000 and then intersecting with Utah Hwy. 276, to finally reach the Bullfrog Marina and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Much of the road is outside Capitol Reef boundaries, and traverses the Circle Cliffs, Long Canyon and The Gulch. The 8.5-mile stretch of road inside the park includes a harrowing, if beautiful, set of switchbacks rising some 800 feet in only 1/2 mile. The switchbacks are not suitable for RVs or vehicles towing trailers. From Boulder to the west boundary of Capitol Reef, the Burr Trail road is paved, and inside the park it's a graded dirt road that's subject to changeable weather conditions. Check at the visitor center before embarking on the Burr Trail Road, which extends all the way from Bryce Canyon National Park in the west to Glen Canyon, southeast of Capitol Reef.
