Ore Terminal Trail Details

This trail is not only a great 8.8-mile out and back hike, but has fascinating history to go along with it. Between 1909 and 1919, an ore mine in Mexico's Sierra del Carmen sent buckets of ore via a 6-mile tramway to the Texas terminal. It was transported by 90 ore buckets along this tramway and then hauled to Marathon to be put on trains. The Texas terminal of this tramway serves as the terminus of this hike. When the mine was abandoned, most of the towers started to crumble and fall apart, but there are a few still standing to due the slowed erosion process in such a dry climate. Aside from the great history, the trail is a great place to see wildflowers and is easy to follow, though it's long distance and many hills make it quite strenuous. To reach the trailhead, park in the small parking lot directly across from the Boquillas Canyon Overlook. Note that this hike is not recommended during the summer as there is no water available and the heat can be unbearable, especially for such a long hike.
