Old Maverick Road Details

This 14-mile improved dirt road runs between Maverick Junction and Santa Elena Canyon. Even though it is one of the better kept dirt roads in the park, a higher vehicle clearance is recommended. Old Maverick road is also very popular with mountain bikers looking for a fun and challenging ride. There are plenty of historic sites along the road including homes and a couple unmarked graves. The road runs along the Terlingua Creek and past the badlands through the western part of the park. Be careful because the washes can be dangerous after rain, but most vehicles can handle it with relative ease. If you are driving, expect it to take about one hour one-way and if you are biking plan for 1.5 - 2 hours one-way.
