Mount Rushmore Details
In 1927, Gutzon Borglum began the project of carving the faces of four American presidents into the granite walls of Mount Rushmore. The project was the brainchild of South Dakota state historian Doane Robinson, who wanted to create a sculpture that would attract tourists to the region. Borglum had President George Washington's face finished within three years. Seven years later, Thomas Jefferson's face was completed, followed two years later by the face of Abraham Lincoln. A few months later, Teddy Roosevelt's face was dedicated, and the masterpiece was complete.
