Keystone, S.D. Details
Keystone is home to one of the most famous landmarks in the country: Mount Rushmore National Memorial. But there are plenty of other activities to do in the area, like taking a guided horseback trip, riding the alpine coaster or scenic chairlift at Rushmore Tramway Adventures, visit an internationally renowned rare-reptiles collection at the Reptile Gardens, and much more. Lodging options range from economical hotels and motels to more luxurious cabin rentals and resorts. Visit one of the region's two wineries, or grab a meal at the Red Garter Saloon, the Carver's Cafe, Holy Terror Coffee Company, or another local restaurant. The town of Keystone began as a mining town in the late 1870s, during the Black Hills gold rush. Before long, companies were also mining mica, tin, quartz, and other minerals. After the Mount Rushmore sculptures were completed in 1941, tourism quickly became the center of the town's economy.
