A few miles north of Custer and the Crazy Horse Memorial, Hill City, S.D., offers many attractions for the history buff. The town is home to Teddy Bear Town, the country's largest collection of teddy bears; the Museum at Black Hills Institute has "STAN," the most complete T-Rex fossil ever found. If you are interested in trains, visit the Train Museum or take a two-hour ride on The 1880 Train, the oldest operating tour train in the country. Stay at the Alpine Inn, Double Diamond Ranch, or any of the other B&Bs, hotels and campgrounds that fill the town. Catch a barbecue dinner at the Circle B Chuckwagon, complete with live bluegrass entertainment, and a pre-dinner Circle B Gunfight for the kids. Other local eats include the Bumpin' Buffalo Bar and Grill, the Mangy Moose Saloon, and the Prairie Berry Winery. Hill City was one of the first towns established during the Black Hills gold rush of the 1970s. Once the gold rush ended, the town enjoyed a brief tin-mining boom. When the Black Hills Central Railroad established its first commuter line in the 1950s, tourism revived the region. Today, Hill City is known as the geological and archaeological center of the Black Hills, due to the large number of archaeological and geological discoveries that have been made in the region.
