Gordon Stockade Details
At around the same time that General George Custer was making his expedition into the Black Hills another party was making their own (slightly more illegal) journey into the region. They were the Gordon Party, and they were searching for gold. They eventually found it in French Creek, where a statue stands today to commemorate their discovery and the gold rush that followed. You'll find the memorial off of Highway 16a, just past Stockade Lake and the Stockade Lake Campground.
