When General George Custer came to the Black Hills in 1874, Golden Valley was where he and his troops established a base camp. It was also where they first discovered gold, setting off the Black Hills gold rush. To get to Golden Valley, take Highway 16a west towards Custer; Goldern Valley is just before the scenic byway turns north on Route 89.
