Thomas Jefferson Details

Sculptor Gutzon Borglum chose the four presidents who grace Mount Rushmore – to him, they represent the first 150 years of American history. Thomas Jefferson, our country's 3rd president (1801-1809), symbolizes "Expansion" and is credited with the Louisiana Purchase on July 4, 1803, which included land that become 15 current U.S. states in the Midwest. Borgum's original design had Jefferson to Washington's right, but the rock was found to be unmanageable, so the work was dynamited and Jefferson was moved to Washington's left. *[In the]…"portraits and data we have of him ... we see the young man, the torch-bearer, the artist, the architect, the musician and builder, the creator in all his varied moods. I am sorry I have only one portrait to make of him." -- Gutzon Borgum* **STATS:** - Total height of face: 60 feet - Eyes: 11 feet wide, each - Nose: 20 feet long - Dedicated: August 30, 1936
