Mt. Rushmore Details
Sculptor Gutzon Borglum's massive masterpiece is the centerpiece of Mount Rushmore National Monument, with its 60-foot-high carvings of four American presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. The sculpture, carved into a granite wall in the Black Hills, took 14 years (1927-1941) to complete. Borglum did not live to see his work finalized, but the monument was finished by his son, Lincoln. Originally known to the Lakota Sioux as Six Grandfathers, Mt. Rushmore was renamed after lawyer Charles E. Rushmore in 1885. The summit stands at 5,725 feet.
