Just about 20 minutes northwest of Mount Rushmore is Hill City, S.D., a quaint town found in South Dakota's Black Hills, first settled after gold was found in nearby French Creek in 1876. Today, Hill City is a great place for visitors to the area to stay within close proximity to Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills, with ample choices in accommodations, restaurants and attractions. Not only that, but Hill City is a hub for archeological, paleontological and geological exploration. After all, this is where "Sue," the most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton in paleontological history, was discovered. (She's now on display at The Field Museum in Chicago.) At the end of the day, toast your discoveries at Prairie Berry Winery, where you'll find wine made from local berries such as chokecherries, buffaloberries, and wild plums.
