Black Hills National Forest Details
In 1897, President Grover Cleveland established the Black Hills Forest Reserve when he protected the land against fires, wasteful lumbering and timber fraud; in 1907, the forest took on its current name, the Black Hills National Forest. Today, the forest covers more than 13,000 acres, in an area 125 miles long and 65 miles wide in western South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming. The area is popular for bicycling, climbing, fishing, hiking, viewing wildlife, boating, SCUBA diving, waterskiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and much more. But most popular of all its attractions is Mount Rushmore National Memorial, found within the central eastern area of the forest and surrounded by Ponderosa pines and rock formations.
