Congaree River Blue Trail Details

For truly experienced paddlers and campers, and those with at least two vehicles, follow the 50-mile Congaree River Blue Trail over the course of two or three days from South Carolina's state capitol, Columbia, through Congaree National Park to the Route 601 Landing to the south (park second vehicle here for pick up). Put in at any of the number of landings found in Columbia (parking available in Columbia), and start paddling. Over the course of the trip, you'll pass through diverse habitats and may even spot bald eagles and alligators among other wildlife. Overnight camping can be done on the river's sandbars during low water periods, and in Congaree National Park's backcountry near River Mile 26; you will need to obtain a free permit from the Longleaf Campground or by calling (803) 776-4396 before embarking on your trip and camping in the park's backcountry. Remember, Congaree National Park does not rent canoes, kayaks, or stand up paddle boards, so if you don't have your own, you'll need to rent from an outfitter in Columbia, about 30 minutes from the park.
