Bath Road Heron Rookery Details
Considering that the Cuyahola River once famously caught fire, it's somewhat amazing that this heavily polluted industrial waterway has been cleaned up enough over the past few decades that it again is home to a variety of fish and waterfowl. Great blue herons, in particular, have been thriving along the river, establishing three heronrys, or nesting colonies, with a total of more than 150 individual nests. The biggest heronries are at Bath Road and near Lock 36, were hundreds of heron chicks hatch annually. You can identify great blue herons by their long legs, height -- more than four feet tall -- and seven-foot wingspan, as well as their distinctive croaking call.
