Elkhorn Ranch Details

Theodore Roosevelt first arrived in North Dakota in 1883 on a hunting trip and was instantly enamored with the land and ranching culture. During that first trip, he invested in the Chimney Butte Ranch, also known as the Maltese Cross Ranch. After a few devastating setbacks in his life, Roosevelt returned to his North Dakota ranch in 1884 seeking solitude. His ranch had a successful year, so Roosevelt upgraded to a larger operation. Roosevelt purchased the land for his new ranch and named it Elkhorn, which he ran with some partners from his home in New York until 1898, when it was sold. Today, Elkhorn Ranch is the third unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park and occupies 218 acres along the Little Missouri River between and to the west of the North and South Units of the park. Elkhorn Ranch can be reached via public and private roads, but a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended and travel is dependent upon seasons and road conditions.
