Caprock Coulee Nature Trail Details
The Caprock Coulee Nature Trail has educational markers that highlight features and geology found along the trail. A "coulee" is a name given to a narrow, deep and dry stream bed or gully like the one a segment of this trail follows. The "caprock" refers to the pieces of sandstone seen sticking out of rock formations that have eroded more slowly than surrounding materials. This trail keeps things interesting with a nice mix of shaded forest and open prairies. It is a bit narrow in some places, which may make it a little difficult to navigate if the trail is muddy, but nothing that should deter you from the hike. The guided Caprock Coolee Nature Trail is 0.8-mile one-way and connects to the 4.1-mile Upper Caprock Coulee Loop, which crosses over North Unit Scenic Drive and winds around the badlands.
