Spence Field/Russell Field Loop Details
This is one of the most stunning springtime trails, and leads to a massive alpine field filled with pink and white mountain laurel, rhododendron, wildflowers, and lush green grasses. The trail to Spence Field, the piece de resistance, can be steep, and doubles as a bridle trail. The sunken path is allegedly the result of years of cattle trampling: like many alpine fields in the Smoky Mountains, the fields were cleared to graze livestock, and those along this loop are maintained by the park to retain their pastoral qualities. There is also a spur trail to Rocky Top from Spence Field, which yields awesome views following a steep ascent to the ledge.
