Primitive Baptist Church Details

This church was built in 1887 to replace a rough log building where the Baptist congregation of Cades Cove had met to worship for six decades. A 19th century schism within the Baptist church helped give the church its name -- Cades Cove residents wanted it known that they believed in a more fundamentalist interpretation of the Bible than some of their other Baptist neighbors. Some church members defiantly continued to hold services here into the 1960s, well after the national park was established.
