Charlie's Bunion Details
Once a heavily forested peak, this 5,565-foot summit fell victim to the thriving logging industry around the turn of the 20th century, and deforestation exposed the natural abnormality now known as Charlie's Bunion. The odd name reportedly stems from a joke about an injury sustained by a climber. Despite the name, it is a popular hiking and climbing area, and features difficult ascents, sheer cliffs, and beautiful views of The Sawteeth, a particularly rough and jagged section of the Smokys.
