Yucca Picnic Area Details

The Yucca Picnic Area offers covered picnic tables, providing much-needed shade from the intense desert sun. Each table is equipped with seating and a raised platform to keep belongings out of the sand. Nearby vault toilets are available for convenience, but there is no running water, so visitors should bring plenty of their own. The area is named after the soaptree yucca, one of the most recognizable plants in White Sands. These striking plants can grow up to 30 feet tall, with long, spiky leaves and delicate white flowers. Some yuccas here appear to "float" on the dunes-an illusion caused by the plant's ability to grow upward as sand buries its base.
