Transition Zone Details
In White Sands, the transition zone is where the stark, rolling dunes gradually give way to more stable ground, allowing vegetation to take root. Here, species like soaptree yucca, desert willow, and fourwing saltbush find just enough stability to grow, their roots anchoring them against the ever-moving sands. Unlike the pure gypsum dunes, which are nearly devoid of plant life, the transition zone supports a wider variety of flora, which in turn attracts more wildlife. Animals in the transition zone have adapted to life on the edge-literally. Creatures like kit foxes, desert cottontails, and burrowing owls take advantage of the partial cover provided by plants while remaining close to the open dunes, where food sources like insects and smaller prey are plentiful. Some species, such as the white-adapted bleached earless lizard, thrive in both environments, seamlessly blending into the gypsum sands.
