Backcountry Camping Trail Details
The Backcountry Camping Loop Trail at White Sands offers an unforgettable journey through the world's largest gypsum dunefield. This 2-mile (3.2 km) loop provides a moderately strenuous challenge, requiring hikers to traverse shifting dunes that rise 40 to 50 feet (12-15 meters). The soft, powdery gypsum sand makes each step more demanding than on a typical hiking trail, adding to the adventure. Most visitors complete the loop in about two to three hours, but conditions such as wind and temperature can impact the experience. The trailhead is located 6.5 miles (10.5 km) from the visitor center along Dunes Drive. Marked by a parking area, the trail is distinguished by orange spade-symbol markers that guide hikers through the rolling dunes. Because the landscape lacks prominent landmarks, it's essential to locate the next marker before advancing. Strong winds can obscure markers with drifting sand, making navigation more difficult. If visibility becomes compromised, returning to the trailhead is the safest option. As hikers move through the gypsum expanse, they are rewarded with breathtaking views of undulating dunes against the dramatic backdrop of the San Andres Mountains. The trail provides an excellent opportunity to observe desert wildlife, including the bleached earless lizard, whose pale coloration helps it blend seamlessly with the white sands. Towering soaptree yuccas stand resiliently among the dunes, adding striking contrast to the vast, white landscape. At sunset, the dunes glow with soft hues of pink and orange, offering one of the most spectacular views in the park. Given the lack of shade and the loose terrain, hikers should come prepared with ample water-at least one gallon (4 liters) per person-along with high-energy snacks. Sun protection, including hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen, is essential. Pets are allowed but must remain leashed, with owners responsible for their hydration and cleanup. Though backcountry camping is currently closed for site rehabilitation, the trail remains an extraordinary way to experience the wild beauty of White Sands.
