The Big Drift Details
Every winter, snow accumulates on the closed Going-to-the-Sun Road. In one area, called the Big Drift, snow can settle up to 80-feet deep and stretch about a mile long. The pileup just east of Logan Pass is caused by wind-pushed snow. Each spring, snow plows tackle clearing Going-to-the-Sun Road and often reach the Big Drift in late May. It then can take another month or more to plow the Big Drift and clear the road of snow. The road is usually open to cars by mid-June, but in years with more snow, the opening can be later.
