Sperry Chalet Trail Details
You'll want to start out early if you plan to hike to Sperry Chalet. In the more than 6 miles you'll hike you'll climb about 3,000-feet. But don't worry if you've worked up an appetite. The chalet's dining room is open to the public from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day during the summer — usually it's open mid-July and closes mid-September — serving soups, sandwiches and snacks. You can make reservations for breakfast or dinner, or to stay overnight in the chalet, allowing you a backcountry experience without having to sleep on the ground. The chalet, built in 1913 by the Great Northern Railway, is now a historic landmark. And whether you plan to stay the night or just go for the day, you'll have to hike your way through a beautiful cedar and hemlock forest and then up to the tree-line. It's an uphill battle the whole way, but you'll earn incredible vista views and that lunch. There are several spur trails along the hike so make sure to read signs to stay on course. Remember, Glacier is grizzly country. Carry bear spray, make noise and travel in groups. Access is via the Sperry Trailhead across from Lake McDonald Lodge.
