Sperry Chalet Details
The historic Sperry Chalet opened in 1914 and was built -- like the Granite Park Chalet -- by the Great Northern Railway to encourage tourism in Glacier. The chalet's rustic stone buildings are now listed as a National Historic Landmark. The chalet is about seven miles east of Lake McDonald and the only access is via trail, either hiking or horseback. Two trails lead to the chalet, including the Sperry Trail, which starts at the Lake McDonald Lodge parking lot and climbs 6.7 miles, with an elevation gain of 3,200 feet. The Gunsight Trail is a 12.1-mile hike from the Jackson Glacier Overlook on Going-to-the-Sun Road. Unlike at Granite Park Chalet, meal service is available at Sperry, including dinner, breakfast, and either a trail lunch or lunch in the dining room. Although the rooms are private, they're akin to camping indoors, with no electricity, heat, or running water. The chalet is generally open from mid-July to mid-September.
