Lake McDonald Details
Lake McDonald, at almost 10 miles long and near 500 feet deep in some parts, is the biggest lake in Glacier National Park. Its clear water reveals brightly colored rocks at the bottom of the shallow shoreline. It's framed by forests and majestic mountains rising in the distance. Trails around the lake allow you to explore the area, but the best way to experience Lake McDonald is to get on or in it. While the lake is home to a variety of native fish, it is nutrient-poor and not considered a prime fishing destination. But there are plenty of other ways to enjoy the water. At Apgar Village you can rent canoes, stand up paddle boards, and motor boats. Despite the chilly, snowmelt-fed water, on hot days people wade and swim along the shore near Apgar Village. You can catch a boat tour from Lake McDonald Lodge. Wherever you are on the lake, all it takes is a quick look up at the looming mountains to remind you that you are someplace special.
