Lake Janet Trail Details
The spires and peaks that make up Porcupine Ridge in Glacier National Park surround Lake Janet and can often be seen in the reflection of its waters on a clear day. The hike to this mountain lake is often quieter than other hikes in the park, in part because of the difficulty of accessing the Goat Haunt trailhead. The Goat Haunt area is often called "the gateway to the northern wilderness of Glacier National Park." From here, you enter a landscape that is not just one of the most stunning in the park, but also one of the most remote. Lake Janet is the first lake you reach as you make your way through the Olson Creek Valley. While the scenery is gorgeous, the lake is lined with vegetation and trees. There isn't a beach or easy lake access. If you continue on the Waterton Lake Trail, you'll see more incredible scenery in the form of towering rocky peaks and Lake Francis another 3.2 miles down the trail. Remember, Glacier is grizzly country. Carry bear spray, make noise and travel in groups. The trailhead is at Goat Haunt, near the Canadian Border.
