Lake Francis Trail Details

If you imagine a backcountry lake in Glacier National Park, it likely would look something like Lake Francis. Bright turquoise water is enclosed in a cirque of monstrous rock walls covered in lush green foliage, and a massive waterfall feeds into the lake. In the distance, you can see the slender peaks known as the Citadel Spires. This is an incredible day hike, or, if you are lucky enough to reserve one of the two backcountry camp sites, a great overnight. Despite the beauty, the lake is quieter than many of Glacier's other postcard settings due to the difficulty of getting to the trailhead, located in the northern part of the park. The Goat Haunt area is often called "the gateway to the northern wilderness of Glacier National Park." From here you enter of a landscape that is not just one of the most stunning in the park, but also one of the most remote. Before reaching Lake Francis, you'll pass Lake Janet as you make your way through the Olson Creek Valley. The spires and peaks that make up Porcupine Ridge in Glacier National Park surround Lake Janet and can often be seen in the reflection of its waters on a clear day. While the scenery is gorgeous, the lake is lined with vegetation and trees. There isn't a beach or easy lake access, and while Lake Janet is beautiful, you'll want to push on to see Lake Francis. Remember, Glacier is grizzly country. Carry bear spray, make noise and travel in groups. The trailhead is at Goat Haunt.
