Kab-Ash Trail Details
At 28 miles, this is one of the longer hiking trails in the park. Luckily, there are four different trailheads, which allows you to hike just a section of the trail if you don't have the time or energy to tackle the whole thing. The trail has a little bit of everything, from marshy lowlands, bogs and wetlands to boreal and coniferous forests and high, rocky outcroppings with superb views. The entire trail takes several days to complete and is also used for cross-country skiing in the winter. The trailheads are located at the end of Salmi Road, just south of the Kabetogama Lake Visitor Center off of County Road 122; on the left side of County Road 129/"Ash River Trail," a few miles before the turnoff for the Ash River visitor Center; at the Beaver Pond Overlook pullout; and at the very end of County Road 129, past the Ash River State Forest Campground. All four of these trailheads have restrooms. The distance from the Kabetogama trailhead to the CR-129 trailhead is just under seven miles. From the CR-129 trailhead to the Beaver Pond Overlook trailhead is around eight miles (there are several different spurs that all link back up with the main trail, so you can increase or decrease this distance). From Beaver Pond to Ash River the distance is around three miles, with an optional 2.5-mile side loop.
