Algoma Details

In 1855 the passenger steam ship Algoma sank off the southeastern shores of Mott Island. A huge storm was rocking the area, causing the ship to run aground on Greenstone Beach. The 1,773 ton ship was shorn in two almost immediately. More than 40 passengers and crew died, while 14 were rescued. Portions of the stern half of the boat can be found scattered across the ocean floor, from ten feet to over 100 feet below the surface. The buoy is connected to a sinker, at 50-feet deep. No one has yet located any portion of the ship's bow. Algoma is one of nine wreck sites that are marked by white mooring buoys with a blue strip. These moorings are only to be used by official dive boats on registered diving operations. Only two dive boats may anchor at a mooring at any given time. All SCUBA diving visitors are required to check in at one of the park's three visitor centers. When your dive is over, return your dive register to the visitor center or send it in by mail. Canadian divers must go through customs before initiating this process. All dive boats must use the standard "diver down" flag. Do not move or remove any artifacts at a wreckage site (doing so is punishable with up to a $10,000 fine).
