Atwood Higgins House Details

Looking at the Atwood Higgins House, you see the classic Cape Cod home -- an early example of an architectural style that's still popular on the island. The house features a typical "saltbox" frame with post-and-beam construction, a large central chimney, a central doorway, and a sharply pitched roof. The house was built on Bound Brook Island to allow easy access to both land and sea, a necessity for the subsistence living typical of early settlers. As the owners grew more prosperous over the decades, the building expanded from the original half-house of the early 1700s to the full Cape you see today, which has eight rooms, four fireplaces, and two beehive ovens.
