Surfside Beach Details
A long, wide section of the Old Orchard Beach which is famous for Charles Lindbergh's unexpected landing on the beach in the Spirit of St. Louis on July 24, 1927. Due to heavy fog, Lindbergh and his guide became disoriented while heading to Portland Airport, so they decided to land on this section of the beach which was known to have a natural runway during low tide. This is because Lindbergh knew Harry Jones, a pioneer aviator, who operated a hanger on the beach between 1919 to 1930. For years, Harry would offer 25-minute plane rides around Prouts Neck for $5
