Gero Island Public Land Details
Chesuncook Lake was created after the building of the Ripogenus Dam and is Maine's third-largest at 26,200 acres. In the middle sits a 3,000 plus acre island which makes up most of what is the Gero Island Public Land. Though it must be reached by boat, for those who make it, the island has shore side campsites and hiking trails to explore. Along with an island parcel, the area also preserves most of the late Chesuncook Village. Originally occupied by Native Americans and converted to a small logging village, it dates to at least the 1840s.
