Though permanently uninhabited today, Damariscove Island has a long history of use by fishermen, farmers, and even the military. Sitting on 210 acres six miles out to sea, the island is hourglassed shaped, fairly flat, and home now mostly to birds. A little over 2 miles of trails for interested visitors run through shrubby fields, open marshy lands, and tidal pools along the waterfront. Old historic building remnants, as well as a museum, are available for tourists in season, when the birds aren't nesting, but are only accessible to see for those willing to take a boat.
