Spanning 1,055 acres near Troy, Maine, Carlton Pond Waterfowl Production Area was established in 1966 to protect waterfowl and other wildlife that is indigenous to central Maine. The dam on Carlton Pond, built in 1850, has been shored up over the years to ensure that the marshes, wetlands, and open water on the refuge are as undisturbed and as stable as possible. This is one of the few areas in Maine where black terns, which are on the endangered species list, will nest. Hiking, wildlife viewing and photography, as well as some environmental education programs are available. Hunting and fishing are allowed with proper licenses, permits, and some restrictions.
