Battery Steele Details
Located on the backside of Peak Island, this is the site of a former World War II battery which has been preserved forever through the efforts of local activists. The battery served as the most important one in the Casco Bay area because of its location at the mouth of Portland Harbor. When operational, it had two 16" guns which could fire a 2,240-pound shell up to 26 miles away.
