Thunder Hole Details
Thunder Hole -- named for the occasional booming sound made by ocean waves hitting a narrow chasm and forcing out trapped air -- has been a popular stop for sightseers since the 1880s. When the tide is low Thunder Hole may just gurgle, but if you're here when the tide is rising or during an ocean storm the sound can be quite loud, and each report is accompanied by a spout of water up to 40 feet high. Thunder Hole is most impressive midway between low and high tide. Don't worry if the steps are closed during bad weather -- you can still hear the sound and see the spray from Thunder Hole from a distance. You also can look for a view of Otter Cliff, and back north for the small arc of Sand Beach. You should use extra caution when visiting Thunder Hole, especially if you are down on the rocks. There is always the possibility of a rogue wave caused by an offshore storm, so never put your back to the ocean!
