Schoodic Woods Campground Details

Schoodic Woods Campground is a scenic and peaceful retreat on the Schoodic Peninsula, about an hour’s drive from Bar Harbor and the main section of Acadia National Park. If you are already on Mount Desert Island, it will take you about an hour to drive to the Schoodic Peninsula. In the summer, a ferry travels between Bar Harbor and Winter Harbor, and the Island Explorer bus provides transportation from the ferry terminal to the Schoodic section of the park, Prospect Harbor, and Winter Harbor. As the only campground in this part of the park, it offers a secluded and less crowded alternative to the campgrounds on Mount Desert Island. Situated just 1.5 miles southeast of Winter Harbor, Schoodic Woods provides a tranquil coastal setting with breathtaking scenery, hiking trails, and cycling routes. The campground operates seasonally from late May through mid-October, requiring reservations in advance through Recreation.gov. Campsites are released in a structured system, with most available six months ahead and a limited number opening up two weeks before the desired arrival date. Schoodic Woods features a variety of campsites, including hike-in tent sites, drive-up tent and small RV sites, as well as RV sites with electric and water hookups. Group tent sites are also available. Fees vary depending on the type of site, and discounts are offered for Senior and Access pass holders. While traditional campfires are prohibited at hike-in sites, campers can use stoves and grills that run on petroleum fuels. The campground is well-equipped with amenities, including accessible restrooms, and features 78 ADA-compliant sites. RV and trailer camping are permitted, though strict length limitations are enforced. Beyond the campground, visitors can explore the stunning Schoodic Peninsula, known for its rugged coastline, panoramic ocean views, and diverse wildlife. The area offers excellent opportunities for hiking, biking, and picnicking. With its serene atmosphere and natural beauty, Schoodic Woods Campground is an ideal destination for those seeking a quieter, more immersive experience within Acadia National Park.
