Otter Cliff Details
Rising 110 feet from the sea, Otter Cliff is one of the highest headlands on the East Coast. A walk up to the cliff edge will provide you with an outstanding view of the Atlantic and the Maine coastline. Offshore, you can see a buoy marking a rock formation called the Spindle which explorer Samuel de Champlain hit while sailing around Mount Desert Island in 1604. You can follow the Ocean Trail on foot north along the shore to Thunder Hole and Sand Beach, or south to Otter Point. Watch your footing, however -- the rocks can be slippery. Otter Cliff is a popular spot for rock-climbing. Despite the dramatic setting, you'll find climbing routes for all levels of ability and local guides can be hired to assist your climb. However, you must obtain a permit, for both commercial and noncommercial groups, if you want to climb here. permits are available through the Park service.
