Duck Harbor Campground Details

Duck Harbor Campground, nestled on Isle au Haut off the coast of Stonington, Maine, offers a truly remote and rustic camping experience within Acadia National Park. Accessible only by mailboat, this secluded destination is ideal for those seeking solitude and adventure in a rugged coastal environment. With just five designated campsites, each featuring a three-sided lean-to shelter, the campground provides a minimalist retreat for campers who appreciate backcountry settings. The shelters, measuring approximately eight feet tall, eight feet deep, and twelve and a half feet wide, serve as the only covered accommodations, and tents are restricted to what can fit within the structure. Campers must bring all necessary gear and supplies, as no stores or services are available on the island. Fires are permitted in designated fire rings, and firewood may be collected from dead and downed wood in the area. However, to prevent the spread of invasive insects, campers are prohibited from bringing their own firewood. A composting toilet is available, along with a hand-pump for potable water, located approximately 1,600 feet from the campsites. Quiet hours are enforced between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m., and generator use is strictly prohibited. The maximum stay is limited to three nights per calendar year, ensuring that the site remains available to as many visitors as possible. Transportation to Isle au Haut is provided by a ferry departing from Stonington, with seasonal service directly to Duck Harbor from mid-June through late September. Outside this period, visitors must hike over four miles from the town landing to reach the campground. Reservations are required, and demand is high, making advanced planning essential. Due to its rugged terrain, Duck Harbor is not wheelchair accessible, and no pets, RVs, or trailers are allowed. This remote, primitive campground offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience Acadia's wild, unspoiled beauty.
