Champlain Monument Details
This rock monument, just to the east of the Day Mountain Trailhead, honors Samuel de Champlain, the French explorer who gave the island its name. Noting its bare and rocky summit, Champlain named it Isles des Monts Desert in 1604. The 108-square-mile island was hardly deserted, however. Shell heaps show that Native Americans inhabited the place some 6,000 years before Champlain's arrival. The Wabanaki Indians called the island "Pemetic," or "Range of Mountains."
