Cadillac Mountain Details

Cyclists looking for a serious challenge-and an unforgettable reward-flock to the Cadillac Mountain Road. Rising to 1,530 feet, Cadillac Mountain is the tallest peak on the U.S. Atlantic coast, and from October 7 through March 6, it holds the claim to fame as the first place in the country to catch the sunrise. While many visitors hike one of the several trails winding to the summit, seasoned cyclists opt for the paved 3.5-mile access road, a ribbon of asphalt that snakes its way up the mountain's granite slopes. The steady 8% grade means this is no casual ride; it demands stamina, focus, and some seriously strong legs. But what goes up must come down-and that's part of the thrill. Many cyclists grind their way up the climb for the exhilarating descent, with sweeping views of Frenchman Bay and the surrounding islands as a backdrop. However, it's not a ride for the faint of heart. Traffic can be heavy, especially in the summer months, and the road's shoulders double as drainage gutters, leaving little room for error. This ride is best left to experienced cyclists who are comfortable sharing the road and handling steep, technical descents. For those who make the climb, though, the payoff-whether it's the sunrise or the sheer joy of the ride-is worth every pedal stroke.
