Around-the-Mountain Trail Details
Trail Type: Difficult Distance: 15 miles This tough trail features a number of Acadia's stunning mountains, including Sargent, Parkman, Cedar Swamp, and Penobscot. Departing from the Eagle Lake parking lot, the trail leads left at Post 6, following the western shores of Eagle Lake until turning right at Posts 8 and 10 and heading up the pitch-pine-covered side of Sargent Mountain. During this strenuous climb, there are wonderful views of nearby Chasm Brook Bridge as well as Somes Sound and the Camden Hills. Continuing straight at Post 12, the trail bears left at Post 19 and begins to ascend along the side of Cedar Swamp Mountain where it intersects with and turns left at Post 20, crossing the Amphitheater Bridge. Another left at Post 21 takes the trail toward the edge of Penobscot Mountain, crossing two more granite bridges and the intersection with Post 14. A right at Post 14 follows a trail to the famous Jordan Pond House, while a left continues along Jordan Cliffs before ducking into a small beech forest. The trail turns right at Post 10 and left at Post 8, returning to the western shores of Eagle Lake.
