Tailwaters Recreation Area Details
The Tailwaters Recreation Area lies outside of the northern border of the park, and is a great location to put a boat in the Nolin River and float downstream into the park. After the Nolin River merges with the Green River, however, visitors need to paddle upstream to Houchins Ferry in order to take out. It is not advised to travel downstream from Houchins Ferry because of unsafe conditions around Lock and Dam No. 6. Tailwaters Recreation Area has a picnic area located at the put-in location. Six miles of the Nolin River pass through Mammoth Cave National Park, offering incredible views of bluffs, trees, and wildlife. The Nolin River has a more narrow channel than the Green River, but still averages 10 feet deep (some parts of the river can be much deeper). The Nolin River typically runs at less than five miles per hour, offering pleasant canoeing conditions without whitewater. During flood conditions, however, water can travel much faster. Boaters should always be alert to hazards like submerged trees and rocks, drifting debris, and the park's ferries. Be sure to pick up a copy of the Backcountry Map & Guide at the Visitor Center before embarking on your trip. When river levels are at or exceed 10 feet, launching watercraft is strongly discouraged due to strong, swift-moving currents that pose a hazard to safety. Outfitters with permits to operate in the park are prohibited from renting or providing canoes during these times. To inquire on current river levels, call 270-758-2417.
