Hobart Prairie Grove Trails Details
Hobart Prairie Grove is a hidden gem within Indiana Dunes National Park, offering a rich blend of natural habitats and recreational trails. Tucked into the landscape are forested ravines and a scenic slice of Lake George-part of the Deep River system-offering a peaceful escape into nature. The Hobart Woodland Trail winds through wooded hillsides and offers a lovely overlook of the lake, while the Oak Savannah Rail Trail cuts through the grove, providing a smooth path for bikers, hikers, and families out for a stroller-friendly stroll. Whether you're in it for the views, the fresh air, or a little cardio, this spot delivers nature's version of a wellness retreat. What makes Hobart Prairie Grove truly stand out is its ecological richness. This 300-acre preserve protects a rare mosaic of environments, including wetlands, white oak flatlands, prairie remnants, and an elusive bur oak savanna. It supports a whopping 343 native plant species and a wide array of wildlife, thanks in part to its distinctive soil composition-70% silt and clay, with just a touch of sand. This unusual mix creates ideal conditions for biodiversity to flourish. Added to the National Park System during the 1992 expansion of what is now Indiana Dunes National Park, the area is also part of a historic rail trail network: the park owns two miles of the nearly nine-mile Oak Savannah Trail, which follows the former Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railroad corridor and connects to even more adventure via the Prairie Duneland Trail heading east toward Chesterton and Porter.
