Dune Ridge Trail Details
A short but scenic lollipop-shaped loop that packs a punch when it comes to views and biodiversity. Perched atop a tall, forested dune, the trail offers sweeping overlooks of the Great Marsh and the vast wetlands and woodlands that stretch southward. These shifting habitats-ranging from sandy foredunes to oak savanna and marsh-are part of what makes Indiana Dunes National Park one of the most biologically diverse parks in the entire national system. Whether you're into birding, wildflowers, or fall colors, there's always something eye-catching along this trail. Starting from the parking lot, you'll head south through a foredune complex with loose, sandy footing before the trail transitions to the firmer ground of an oak savanna. At the loop junction, take a left to hike clockwise-beginning on an old roadbed before veering right onto a narrower path that climbs the dune ridge. From the top, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Great Marsh, a true must-see gem. The descent includes a steep, sandy section, so watch your footing as the trail loops back to the junction. From there, turn left again to head north and wrap up your hike. For extra adventure nearby, be sure to check out Kemil Beach just down the road.
