Des Plaines River Trail Details

This multi-use path is a great way for hikers, walkers, horseback riders, bikers, and even snow-shoers and snowmobilers (in winter, of course) to explore the northeastern side of Illinois. For over 56 miles, it travels next to the Des Plaines River through the different landscapes and towns in Lake and Cook County. The north part of the trail along the tree-lined woods and the grassy riverbank is very well maintained. There is also a lot of wildlife in this area. Do not be surprised to cross paths with deer, snakes, or turtles doing your ride. The southern end of the trail after Lake Cook Road is a little more rugged, although it should be found if you have a sturdy mountain bike.
