Paliku Cabin Details

The Paliku Cabin, at an elevation of 6,380 feet, is at the east end of the main valley in the park's wilderness area, and sits at the base of a rainforest cliff. This is the hardest of the park's three overnight cabins to get to: it's at the end of a strenuous 9.3-mile hike on the Keoneheʻeheʻe Trail, 10.1 miles on Halemauʻu Trail, or 8.6 miles up the Kaupo Trail. With clouds and fog often rolling over the top of the cliffs behind Paliku, the area is quite cool and lush. Campers in this area will share space with a reintroduced community of endangered Hawaiian geese called nene. Hikers should stay on designated trails and not feed or otherwise interfere with the birds. There are three rustic wilderness cabins available via reservation for overnight stays in Haleakala National Park. The cabins are accessible only by trail, and each person is limited to a three-night stay per 30-day period, with a maximum of two nights in one cabin. The maximum group size allowed at the cabins is 12 people. Hikers can make reservations up to 180 days in advance using the [www.recreation.gov](http://www.recreation.gov) or by calling 877-444-6777. Permits must be picked up at Headquarters Visitor Center between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on the day of the hike. Each of the three cabins costs a flat fee of $75 per night, regardless of the party size. Each cabin features limited amenities such as pit toilets and water nearby, although it's not potable and must be filtered or treated before drinking. Each cabin also has a wood-burning stove with limited firewood, a two-burner propane stove, cooking utensils and dishes, and 12 padded bunks. There is no electricity in the cabins.
