Paurotis Pond Details
Paurotis Pond is a bird nesting site located right in the middle of the Everglades. It is closed seasonally to protect the nesting birds that inhabit the pond from human disturbance, but when open it can be a great place to see storks, egrets, ibis, spoonbills, and herons. Pond closures vary from year to year depending on bird migration, so be sure to call beforehand to check with the park. Nesting season typically happens in the winter, when thousands of birds prepare to build and breed. The Everglades takes special care of one species: the Wood Stork. Prior to 2014, the stork was listed as endangered, but was recently moved to the threatened list, which reflects a fairly successful conservation effort over past three decades. Paurotis Pond has been a nesting site for over 400 pairs of Wood Storks in recent years. Contact the park at 305-242-7700 for information on the status of Paurotis Pond.
