Anhinga Trail Details
The Anhinga trail is .8 miles round trip and an awesome hike if you're looking to see a variety of wildlife without venturing too far. The self-guided loop takes visitors through a sawgrass marsh with multiple opportunities to spot gators, herons, turtles, and tons of birds. The trail begins at the Royal Palm Visitor Center and is a mix of boardwalk and paved surface, so those with mobility issues don't need to worry about managing rough surfaces. Because the trail begins at the visitor center popularity is pretty much guaranteed, so don't be surprised if it's crowded! From the visitor center, follow the paved path (which is actually a segment of the Old Ingraham Highway) around the Taylor Slough, one of the few areas in the park that retains water year-round. Because of this, wildlife is pretty much constantly prevalent around the trail, particularly during the dry season. At .2 miles, there is an observation deck over the marsh, one of the first viewing points of the trail. Further down the trail, odd clusters of trees appear. These trees are called Pond Apple - cormorants often gather around here, so keep your eyes peeled. After passing the trees, continue along the trail to the next observation deck over a wider part of the slough. If you see a "log" in the water here, chances are that it's actually a gator! This is one of the best places to see alligators and other aquatic reptiles in the park. To get back to the parking lot, return to the main path and turn right on the boardwalk. Take your time and walk slowly, as you never quite know what might be swimming in the waters next to you or flying right above.
